The Dangerous Things We Desire: Venus + Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio

There's something deliciously dangerous about wanting someone you know you shouldn't. The attraction gets under your skin, occupies your thoughts, and makes a complete mockery of whatever sensible decisions you've made about your love life. You know perfectly well that someone is wrong for you, yet the desire persists with an intensity that makes you question how much control you actually have over yourself.

Sometimes the attraction has very little to do with the person. You're addicted to how you feel around them. The tension. The uncertainty. The possibility of finally getting something you've spent your entire life trying to prove you deserve. Suddenly, you're calling something destiny that your psyche has been rehearsing for twenty years.

Jung understood how unconscious complexes can turn unresolved emotional experiences into powerful attractions. The person changes, but the emotional pattern survives, and we keep returning to it because some part of us is convinced that this time we'll finally get a different ending.

Welcome to Venus + Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, where desire, power, and the stories we tell ourselves about both are about to get considerably harder to ignore.

Two Retrogrades, One Psychological Underworld

Venus stationed retrograde at approximately 8° Scorpio on October 3, beginning a six-week review of our relationships, desires, finances, and values. Mercury stations retrograde at approximately 21° Scorpio on October 24. Venus returns to Libra on October 25, and both planets station direct on November 13.

The timing is significant, but so is the planetary symbolism. Venus governs what we love, what we value, and what we're willing to exchange for pleasure or security. Mercury governs thought, language, perception, and the beliefs through which we interpret our experiences. Scorpio is fixed water, traditionally ruled by Mars and associated with Pluto in modern astrology. Its territory includes intimacy, sexuality, shared resources, psychological power, and the uncomfortable reality that our strongest attachments can expose our deepest vulnerabilities.

Scorpio's traditional ruler, Mars, adds another dimension. Desire is never entirely passive here. Mars wants to pursue, possess, defend, and protect. When Venus moves through Mars's territory, questions of pleasure become entangled with questions of power. Who has it, who wants it, and what happens when getting what we desire requires surrendering some of our control?

Retrograde motion, astrologically, turns our attention toward unfinished material. Venus and Mercury are revisiting different parts of the same territory, creating an opportunity to examine the relationship between what we want and what we've convinced ourselves it means.

Some of our desires give us something we'd be ashamed to admit we enjoy.

Venus in Scorpio: The Psychology of Desire

Venus is traditionally in detriment in Scorpio, opposite Taurus, one of her domiciles. This doesn't mean Venus becomes weak or incapable of love. It means her natural inclinations toward pleasure, harmony, and attraction must operate through a sign concerned with emotional exposure, survival, and control.

Taurus, fixed earth, wants to enjoy what it possesses. Scorpio, fixed water, wants to know what possession costs. Venus in Scorpio confronts the reality that intimacy gives another person access to parts of us we'd prefer to keep protected. The deeper the attachment, the greater the possibility of loss, and the greater the temptation to control what we cannot guarantee.

This is where desire becomes psychologically complicated. Being chosen by someone whose affection is difficult to secure can feel like winning a private war. Their attention becomes proof that we're worthy, desirable, or finally good enough. What began as attraction becomes an attempt to settle an emotional debt that predates the relationship.

Jung's concept of the complex is useful here. A complex is an emotionally charged network of memories, associations, and beliefs organized around a particular theme. When someone activates one, our reactions can become wildly disproportionate to the present situation. We mistake the intensity for evidence that the connection is otherworldly, when part of what we're experiencing is the activation of something unresolved.

Venus retrograde in Scorpio brings these attachments back under examination. It also draws attention to money and shared resources, traditionally associated with Scorpio through its correspondence with the eighth house in modern astrology. Financial dependence, unequal contributions, and unspoken expectations expose the ways security and affection become intertwined. A relationship can become difficult to leave when emotional attachment and material survival are tied together.

The shadow of Venus in Scorpio is found in what we're willing to tolerate, sacrifice, or manipulate to keep access to something we want.

The Eight-Year Venus Cycle: October 2018 Returns

Venus retrogrades approximately every eighteen months, but her retrograde pattern contains a larger cycle that deserves attention. Over eight years, Venus completes five retrograde periods at roughly five points around the zodiac. Connecting those points creates the familiar five-petaled or pentagram-like geometry associated with the Venus cycle.

The pattern repeats with a slight shift in degrees, which brings us to October 2018.

In 2018, Venus stationed retrograde at approximately 11° Scorpio before returning to Libra and stationing direct near 25° Libra. In 2026, she begins at approximately 8° Scorpio and stations direct near 23° Libra. We're revisiting almost the exact same zodiacal territory eight years later.

Think about October and November 2018. What was happening in your relationships? What did you believe you deserved? What were you willing to sacrifice for love, security, or the approval of someone whose opinion carried too much weight?

The value of looking back isn't to predict a repeat of the same circumstances. It's to examine how your relationship with desire has changed. Eight years ago, you had a different understanding of yourself. You'd lived through fewer experiences, made different choices, and operated from beliefs that have since been challenged. Yet some patterns survive even when the people and circumstances surrounding them change. We can become more accomplished, more self-aware, and more confident while continuing to make decisions from an emotional wound we've never fully examined.

The Venus cycle gives us a way to measure that development. Eight years later, are you still willing to pay the same emotional price for what you want?

The Venus Cazimi: Desire Meets Consciousness

On October 23 in Central Time, retrograde Venus meets the Sun near 1° Scorpio in an inferior conjunction. This is the midpoint of her retrograde cycle, when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun and transitions from her evening-star phase toward her morning-star phase.

In traditional astrology, a planet within approximately seventeen arcminutes of the Sun is considered cazimi, or in the heart of the Sun. Unlike the broader condition of combustion, cazimi is traditionally associated with exceptional strength. Symbolically, the Venus cazimi represents a turning point in our understanding of what we love and value.

The sign makes this conjunction super compelling. Venus is meeting the Sun in Scorpio, where her natural desire for pleasure encounters questions of vulnerability, possession, and power. The Sun represents consciousness, identity, and the organizing center of the personality. Venus represents attraction, values, and the principle of relationship. Their conjunction brings attention to the motives beneath our desires. An attachment we've defended for years can look different when we recognize the psychological role it's been playing. Something we believed we couldn't live without becomes easier to examine once we understand what it represents.

The cazimi doesn't resolve the entire retrograde. It marks a turning point within it. Venus still has to return to Libra, station direct, and retrace the degrees she's already covered. Awareness arrives before the work of changing our choices. And almost immediately after Venus meets the Sun, Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio.

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio: When Perception Becomes Personal

Mercury stations retrograde on October 24 at 21° Scorpio, less than a day after Venus reaches her inferior conjunction with the Sun. Mercury rules thought, communication, language, and the mental frameworks through which we understand reality. Scorpio is fixed water, and its traditional ruler, Mars, gives Mercury's investigative intelligence a penetrating, confrontational quality. This placement wants to understand what's underneath the surface, particularly when the truth involves something we'd rather conceal.

Mercury in Scorpio has a remarkable capacity for recognizing contradictions and unspoken motives. But fixed water has a tendency to become emotionally attached to its conclusions. Once we've decided what someone's behavior means, our minds can become remarkably skilled at collecting evidence that supports the verdict.

Jung's concept of the complex is relevant here. An emotionally charged complex can influence what we notice, how we interpret it, and what we remember. We can become convinced we're accurately reading someone's intentions when we're actually reacting to an expectation established long before they entered our lives. The more emotionally invested we become, the harder it is to distinguish perception from projection.

Unlike Venus, Mercury never leaves Scorpio during this retrograde. It retraces the territory between 21° and 5° Scorpio, bringing the same themes back for examination. Mercury's pre-retrograde shadow began October 4, meaning the conversations, decisions, and discoveries unfolding since then provide context for what gets revisited. This is where the two retrogrades begin telling different stories: Venus is questioning what we value and desire, Mercury is questioning the beliefs we've used to justify those desires.

The Mercury Cazimi: November 4

On November 4, retrograde Mercury meets the Sun at approximately 12° Scorpio in an inferior conjunction, the midpoint of Mercury's retrograde cycle. Like Venus, Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun during this conjunction, transitioning from its evening-star phase toward its morning-star phase.

In traditional astrology, cazimi describes a planet positioned within the heart of the Sun, a condition associated with exceptional strength and clarity. Symbolically, Mercury's cazimi represents a turning point in perception, when information we've been reconsidering takes on a different meaning.

The fact that this happens in Scorpio is important. Mercury is examining material connected to intimacy, power, secrets, trust, and the motives beneath our behavior. The Sun brings conscious attention to whatever Mercury has been investigating. The psychological implication is huge. We can spend years constructing a convincing explanation for something that happened to us, only to discover that our interpretation has been shaped by a fear we've never questioned. Recognizing that distinction changes our relationship with the experience itself.

What makes this retrograde season even more significant is that Venus and Mercury both experience their inferior conjunctions in Scorpio within twelve days of each other. Venus reaches the heart of the Sun first, bringing questions of desire and value into focus. Mercury follows, examining the beliefs and perceptions surrounding those desires. Astrologically, these are two separate planetary cycles. Together, they create a sequence of symbolic renewal involving what we want and how we understand it.

Venus Returns to Libra: Desire Meets Reciprocity

On October 25, Venus retrogrades back into Libra, one of her domiciles. This changes the character of the retrograde.

In Scorpio, Venus operates in Mars's territory, where intimacy involves vulnerability, emotional exposure, and questions of power. In Libra, Venus returns to a sign she rules, giving her greater dignity and shifting the emphasis toward balance, reciprocity, fairness, and the agreements that make relationships function.

Libra is cardinal air, which means its approach to relationships is more concerned with negotiation and social exchange than Scorpio's fixed emotional intensity. Venus in Libra understands that desire exists within a relationship between two people, each with their own needs, expectations, and autonomy. This is where the psychological material uncovered in Scorpio becomes relevant to our actual behavior. We can recognize that an attachment is unhealthy and still participate in it. We can understand why we crave validation and continue expecting someone else to provide it.

Venus in Libra brings us back to the agreements we've made, including the ones we've never communicated. We give affection expecting loyalty. We compromise expecting appreciation. We convince ourselves we're being generous while privately keeping track of what we're owed. The issue is the difference between what we've consciously agreed to and what we've secretly expected.

Venus's return to her domicile gives us the ability to reconsider those arrangements from a more balanced perspective. Scorpio exposes the hidden motive and Libra examines whether our behavior reflects the values we claim to hold.

November 13: Two Planets Station Direct

On November 13, Mercury stations direct at 5° Scorpio, and Venus stations direct at 23° Libra. Both planets changing direction on the same calendar day is a wild feature of this retrograde season!

Mercury's station brings the reconsideration of our beliefs, perceptions, and conversations to a turning point. Venus's station brings the review of our values, relationships, and desires to its own turning point. The symbolism is strong because the planets have spent nearly three weeks retrograde together, working through interconnected themes from different astrological positions, but their stories don't end at the stations.

Mercury remains in its post-retrograde shadow until November 30, when it moves beyond 21° Scorpio. Venus continues retracing her retrograde territory until December 15, when she passes 8° Scorpio. She also returns to Scorpio on December 4, revisiting the sign where her retrograde began. That final return deserves attention too. Venus entered Scorpio carrying the desires and values we'd been living by. After retracing her steps through Libra, she returns to Scorpio with a different perspective on what those desires cost and how they influence our relationships.

The Difference Between Wanting and Choosing

Eight years ago, Venus traveled through this same territory. Since then, we've loved people, lost people, changed our minds, and learned things about ourselves we couldn't have understood in 2018. Yet the return of this cycle raises an uncomfortable possibility: we've changed far more than our desires have.

Jung believed that what remains unconscious continues to influence our lives until we develop a conscious relationship with it, and desire is one of the most revealing places to look. We can understand exactly why we're attracted to something destructive and still want it. We can recognize a familiar pattern and still feel the urge to participate. The unconscious doesn't surrender its influence simply because we've become clever enough to explain it.

That's where these retrogrades become personally significant. Venus exposes what we want and what we're willing to sacrifice to get it. Mercury challenges the stories we've used to justify those choices. The return to Libra brings us face-to-face with how those desires affect the people we love and the agreements we've made.

Eight years from now, Venus will return to this part of the zodiac again. The circumstances will be different, and so will we. But the decisions we're making now will determine which patterns we carry into that next chapter.

Desire reveals what has power over you. Your choices reveal whether you're willing to keep giving it that power.
