The Libra New Moon: The Price of Keeping the Peace
October 10, 2026 | 17° Libra | The 10/10 Portal
There's something deliciously ironic about a New Moon in Libra arriving with its ruling planet retrograde in Scorpio and in an exact square to Mars. Libra has a reputation for being the charming diplomat of the zodiac, the one who wants everyone to get along and prefers to handle conflict with grace and sophistication. Which is lovely, except human relationships are full of some pretty ugly shit. We get jealous of people we love, resent people we've willingly made sacrifices for, and manipulate situations to get the emotional responses we want. Then we convince ourselves we're simply communicating our needs. Human beings have an AMAZING ability to make their least flattering behavior sound perfectly reasonable, especially when there's love involved.
This New Moon is putting those contradictions under a microscope, and Venus retrograde in Scorpio wants to know what's REALLY motivating our behavior.
On October 10, the Sun and Moon meet at 17° Libra, beginning a lunar cycle focused on relationships and the agreements we make with other people. New Moons happen in darkness, making them a fitting symbol for unconscious material that hasn't reached our awareness yet. This one also falls on the numerologically significant 10/10 portal, associated with completion and new beginnings. In numerology, 10 reduces to 1, the number of individuality and self-definition, which is particularly interesting considering Libra is concerned with how we relate to others.
The 10/10 portal is a modern spiritual concept rather than a traditional astronomical event, but the symbolism fits beautifully. We're being presented with an opportunity to begin a new chapter in our relationships while examining agreements made by versions of ourselves we don't even recognize anymore. Of course, Venus has a few things to say about that...
Venus Retrograde in Scorpio: The Uncomfortable Truth About Love
Venus rules Libra, so her condition tells us a LOT about this New Moon. She's retrograde in Scorpio, the sign of her traditional detriment, where the planet of love and pleasure gets tangled up in intimacy, power, and vulnerability. Scorpio is interested in everything we keep hidden because admitting it exists would seriously interfere with the image we have of ourselves.
Venus in Scorpio wants to know what love costs. She craves access to the parts of another person nobody else gets to see and an intimacy that makes ordinary affection seem almost insulting. There's incredible passion here, but also a tendency to confuse emotional intensity with intimacy and possession with devotion. Sometimes what feels like an otherworldly connection is actually two people's unconscious wounds having a heyday together.
Jung understood that romantic relationships are fertile ground for projection. We're drawn to people who embody qualities we've disowned within ourselves, then expect them to carry parts of our psyche we've never learned to recognize. When they stop supporting that fantasy, we feel betrayed. The ego LOOOVES this arrangement because it gets to blame someone else for the discomfort of confronting something that actually belongs to us!
Consider someone who prides themselves on being the most generous partner imaginable. They make sacrifices without being asked, building a convincing identity around being selfless. What they're unwilling to admit is that every sacrifice comes with an invisible invoice. Their generosity has become a way of securing affection, and when their partner fails to repay a debt they never knew existed, resentment comes knocking. Now they're furious about being unappreciated, completely unaware that their supposed selflessness has been functioning as emotional control. The worst part is that they genuinely believe they're the victim.
This is where the whole cultural obsession with labeling everyone a narcissist gets interesting. We've become VERY comfortable identifying manipulation in other people while remaining spectacularly blind to our own. Sometimes the person we're convinced is emotionally abusive is responding to a dynamic we've been helping create. That's an uncomfortable possibility, but pretending it doesn't exist isn't doing anyone's relationships any favors.
THIS is the material Venus retrograde in Scorpio wants us to confront. The shadow contains motives that threaten our carefully constructed identities, and relationships have a fabulous way of dragging them into the light.
Mercury is also in Scorpio, loosely conjunct Venus, adding another layer to the investigation. Mercury wants to understand, while Scorpio wants to get beneath the explanation we've rehearsed a hundred times. This combination brings major realizations when we're willing to examine our own behavior with the same enthusiasm we reserve for dissecting everyone else's. Imagine that.
Venus Square Mars: When Desire Becomes a Power Struggle
The most provocative aspect of this New Moon is the exact square between retrograde Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Leo. Venus represents attraction and what we value, while Mars describes how we pursue our desires. These planets have a naturally erotic relationship, but the square introduces a conflict between wanting intimacy and wanting control.
Mars in Leo wants to be wanted. It's passionate and expressive, but its ego has a MASSIVE investment in feeling special. Venus in Scorpio wants emotional depth and exclusive access to another person's inner world. When she doesn't get the proof she wants, suspicion creeps in. Suddenly, the desire to be loved is competing with the desire to have the upper hand, and the relationship becomes a very violent dance between two wounded egos.
Here's something I find intriguing about shadow work: we become SO invested in protecting ourselves that we create the exact relationship problems we're terrified of experiencing. I go back to this time and time again because it's one of the most fascinating and infuriating contradictions of the human psyche.
Someone feels vulnerable and withdraws affection to regain control. Their partner feels rejected and demands reassurance, which makes the first person withdraw even further. Now both are pissed off, both feel misunderstood, and both have a perfectly reasonable explanation for why the other person is responsible. Meanwhile, their unconscious defenses are running the entire charade!
People seriously underestimate how sophisticated the shadow is. We imagine manipulation as some calculated scheme, but A LOT of it happens automatically. We genuinely love someone while using their affection to prop up our self worth, or crave intimacy while punishing the vulnerability that makes it possible. Being unaware of the motive doesn't erase the impact.
With Venus and Mars in fixed signs, these dynamics become especially stubborn. Scorpio remembers the emotional wound, Leo remembers the insult to its pride, and suddenly the relationship becomes a competition over whose pain deserves more recognition. The uncomfortable truth is that what we call love is sometimes a demand for someone else to make us feel a certain way about OURSELVES. Until we recognize that distinction, we spend YEARS trying to fix relationships while participating in the behaviors damaging them. (Hi, it's me. I'm "we".)
Vesta in Aries: Who Gets Your Devotion?
There's another aspect I want to mention because it fits this lunation beautifully, and the asteroid happens to be the namesake of my business, Violet + Vesta, teehee.
Vesta is in Aries, opposing the Libra New Moon. It's a wider aspect than the Venus-Mars square, but the symbolism is worth exploring. In mythology, Vesta represents the sacred flame. Astrologically, she symbolizes devotion and what we dedicate ourselves to. Aries represents individuality and personal will, so this opposition highlights the conflict between devotion to relationships and devotion to ourselves.
I've always loved Vesta's symbolism because devotion is such a loaded concept. We romanticize sacrifice, convincing ourselves that giving up pieces of who we are proves how deeply we love someone. But there's a HUGE psychological difference between giving because you genuinely want to and giving because you're terrified of what happens if you don't. The behavior looks identical, but the unconscious motive changes everything.
Vesta in Aries reminds us that loving someone doesn't require handing over the keys to our identity. Mature intimacy depends on remaining separate individuals even within profound connection. Libra wants partnership, while Aries wants autonomy, and this opposition exposes where we've confused devotion with obligation.
The 10/10 Portal: Renegotiating the Unconscious Contract
What makes this New Moon interesting is that we're being offered a fresh beginning while its ruling planet is retrograde. Venus is revisiting old emotional territory as the Sun and Moon open a new cycle, suggesting that whatever comes next depends on our willingness to reconsider the psychological agreements we've been living by. Some of those agreements were made before we even understood what we were signing up for.
From a Jungian perspective, the persona develops as we learn which parts of ourselves earn acceptance. We adapt and build an identity that allows us to function in relationships, while the qualities that threaten that identity get pushed into the shadow. Those disowned parts continue influencing our behavior whether we acknowledge them or not.
The problem is that we spend DECADES defending an identity built to survive circumstances we no longer live in. This is why insight becomes such a seductive trap. People spend years analyzing their childhood and identifying patterns, yet continue making the exact same choices. There's something satisfying about explaining our behavior, especially when the explanation allows us to remain the reasonable person in the story.
Understanding where a behavior came from doesn't mean we're willing to surrender whatever it's providing. That's where individuation gets uncomfortable... We have to recognize that our familiar patterns serve psychological needs we'd rather not admit we have, and some of those benefits are going to make us feel like complete assholes when we finally acknowledge them.
The 10/10 portal offers a symbolic opportunity to renegotiate these arrangements. The number 1 emphasizes self definition, while Libra reminds us that relationships reveal who we are. This is about recognizing where our identity depends on maintaining a particular dynamic and choosing who we want to become instead.
With Venus retrograde, there's no need to rush. Scorpio is perfectly comfortable investigating territory most people avoid, and the real work is getting curious about what's motivating our behavior when the answers threaten our favorite stories about ourselves.
Pay attention to the moments when you feel compelled to defend your innocence. Notice what you believe other people owe you and how invested you've become in that narrative. Resentment reveals unmet needs, but it also exposes the unconscious benefits of staying attached to a particular version of events.
The Libra New Moon concerns the quality of our relationships, while Venus retrograde in Scorpio demands honesty about our role in creating them. Genuine intimacy requires recognizing our shadow and taking responsibility for the dynamics we perpetuate, including the ones that hurt us.
Perhaps the real price of keeping the peace is realizing how much of yourself you've been willing to sacrifice to avoid confronting the truth about who you really are inside your relationships.
